AI Share of Voice
AI share of voice is the percentage of AI-generated answers in a category where your brand is mentioned, relative to competitors, across a defined set of prompts and engines. It adapts the classic media metric to generative search: instead of counting ad impressions or press mentions, you count appearances inside the AI answers buyers actually see.
Share of voice only means something against a fixed denominator. The practical setup is a prompt pack — the same category questions, run on the same engines, on the same schedule — so that a change in the number reflects a change in the answers rather than a change in what you asked.
The metric's real value is competitive context. Your absolute mention rate might look healthy at 60%, but if a rival appears in 90% of the same answers and is named first in most of them, you are losing the surface. Share of voice makes that asymmetry visible and assignable.
A useful refinement is weighting by intent: appearing in answers to 'best X for enterprise' is worth more than appearing in generic definitional answers. Teams that track share of voice on buyer-intent prompts specifically get a number that correlates with pipeline, not just presence.
