Answer Engine
An answer engine is a system that responds to a query with a synthesized answer rather than a list of links — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews all qualify. The shift from search engine to answer engine collapses the buyer journey: vendor selection and framing happen inside the answer, not on your website.
The structural difference from search is editorial. A search engine ranks documents and lets the user judge; an answer engine reads the documents and delivers a verdict — which products fit, how they compare, what the caveats are. The engine's synthesis becomes the buyer's starting frame, and later research tends to confirm rather than rebuild it.
Answer engines differ in how they know things. Some answer from training data alone (bounded by a knowledge cutoff), most now retrieve live sources and ground their answers with citations, and several blend both. The same question can therefore produce current, cited answers on one engine and stale, uncited ones on another.
For marketers the practical takeaway is that 'the engine' is plural. Coverage, accuracy, and recommendations must be checked per engine, because each has its own retrieval stack, source preferences, and update cadence.
