Citation Monitoring
Citation monitoring is the ongoing tracking of which URLs and domains an AI engine cites when answering questions about your brand or category. It shows whether AI grounds its answers in your documentation and pricing pages or in third-party sources — review sites, Reddit threads, competitor comparisons — that you don't control.
In retrieval-backed engines, citations are the supply chain of the answer: the claims in the response come, directly or indirectly, from the cited pages. Monitoring them answers two questions at once — where is AI getting its information about us, and are those sources ones we can influence?
The patterns to watch: your own domain's share of citations rising or falling, new third-party sources entering the mix, a competitor's comparison page being cited on your branded prompts, and previously cited pages going stale. Each pattern maps to a concrete action — refresh the page, pitch the publication, publish the missing comparison.
Citation monitoring also exposes engine differences. Perplexity, Gemini, and ChatGPT search retrieve and weight sources differently, so the same prompt can be grounded in entirely different pages per engine. Fixing your representation on one engine may require a different source than on another.
