Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of formatting content so answer engines can extract it as a direct response: question-shaped headings, concise standalone definitions, FAQ and how-to schema, and clear entity references. AEO overlaps with GEO but focuses specifically on being quoted as the answer — in a featured snippet, voice reply, or AI-generated response.
AEO grew out of featured-snippet optimization and voice search, and the core insight carries over to LLMs: engines prefer content that answers a question completely in one extractable block. A 45-word definition under a question heading is far more likely to be lifted into an answer than the same information scattered across three marketing paragraphs.
For B2B SaaS, the highest-leverage AEO surfaces are the pages that state checkable facts — pricing, integrations, security and compliance, feature availability. When those facts exist only in tables, screenshots, or vague copy, answer engines fill the gap from third-party sources, which is where outdated and wrong claims come from.
A practical AEO workflow: list the questions buyers ask, write a standalone answer for each, mark pages up with FAQPage or QAPage schema, then verify by asking the engines those questions and checking whether your phrasing — and your URL — appears in the response.
