Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and publishing content so generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews — cite your pages and represent your brand accurately in their answers. Where SEO targets rankings on a results page, GEO targets inclusion and framing inside the answer itself.
GEO matters because the surface where buying decisions start is shifting from links to answers. An answer engine does not show ten blue links; it names two or three vendors and characterizes each in a sentence. Being absent from that sentence — or misdescribed in it — is the new page-two problem.
In practice GEO combines several disciplines: making facts extractable (clear definitions, question-shaped headings, concise standalone claims), making the brand an unambiguous entity (consistent naming, schema markup, corroborating third-party references), earning citations on the sources engines actually retrieve, and keeping AI crawlers unblocked so your canonical pages can feed answers.
Unlike SEO, GEO has no public rank tracker — the only way to know whether it is working is to query the engines with realistic buyer prompts and measure mentions, recommendations, and citations over time. Content changes should be validated against answer changes, not proxy metrics.
