llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed standard file placed at a site's root that gives large language models a curated, markdown-formatted guide to the site's most important content. Modeled loosely on robots.txt but permissive rather than restrictive, it helps AI systems find canonical pricing, documentation, and product facts instead of guessing from scattered pages.
The idea behind llms.txt is that websites are built for humans and browsers — navigation chrome, marketing layers, JavaScript — while LLMs benefit from a concise map: here is what this company does, here are the canonical pages for pricing, features, docs, and comparisons, in clean markdown. Some sites extend this with full markdown mirrors of key pages.
Adoption is voluntary on both sides and engine support is uneven, so llms.txt is best treated as a low-cost hedge rather than a guaranteed channel: it takes an hour to produce, cannot hurt, and if an engine's retrieval pipeline honors it, your canonical facts win over scraped fragments.
Keep it maintained like any canonical artifact — an llms.txt pointing at outdated pricing is worse than none, because it hands the model stale facts with your explicit endorsement.
