Competitor Displacement
Competitor displacement is when an AI engine that previously named or recommended your product on a buyer-intent prompt shifts to recommending a competitor instead. Because AI answers change with model updates and fresh sources, displacement can happen silently between two scans — and it directly reroutes buyers who trust the answer they get.
Displacement is the AI-era equivalent of losing a top ranking, with two aggravating differences: there is no public page where you can see it happen, and the buyer does not scroll past the winner to find you — the answer typically names one or two vendors and stops.
Common triggers include a model refresh that reweights sources, a competitor shipping content that engines start citing, a high-authority comparison article that frames the category around a rival, or your own pages going stale on the facts the prompt asks about. The cause is usually diagnosable from the citations attached to the new answer.
Detection requires longitudinal data: the same prompt, the same engine, compared across scans. An answer diff that shows 'previously recommended: you; now recommended: competitor' is both the alarm and the evidence — it tells you which question flipped, on which engine, and which sources the engine now leans on. Perciva raises exactly this kind of flip alert the moment it appears in a scan.
